[diary]: 節省能源
I receive a circular Today at office about saving energy by switching off the monitors when unuse. I think it is quite good, let's follow! (Actually, most people (me also) doesn't shut down the computer even at day end. This is definitely a lazy, selfish and shortsighted act.
Dear Sir or Madam,
Re: HSBC Centre Energy Awareness
As part of our on-going commitment to reduce energy in HSBC Centre, we invite all Building Users to help us improve energy efficiency practices within the building.
At present, the majority of staff shut their computers down when going off duty but very few switch their monitors off during the day when they are not using them. Most people use screen savers, however, these do not save energy.
During a recent exercise where we tested several 15” and 17” LCD and CRT monitors, the results showed that 8 to 15 % of energy is still consumed when the PC is set to energy saving stand by mode. Electricity consumption for computers during normal working conditions and set to screen saver mode is the same.
In HSBC Centre, based on the assumption of 5,000 plus monitors, a saving of 300 kWh or 110,000 kWh per annum could be achieved if all monitors were switched off by an extra hour a day. This equates to a reduction of 61.38 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum.
Clearly, we could save energy and reduce CO2 emissions if everyone shuts their computers down when not using them. Often, there are times during the day, when we do not use the computer for a while (e.g. at lunch time or during meetings). It is good practise to switch off the monitor during these periods. When equipment powers down, it generates less heat, collects less dust and reduces mechanical stress, promoting a longer and more reliable life for the computer and monitor.
There are many ways you can be environmentally friendly in your work place. Try to practise this and help conserve our environment.
